OpenDesign: a free Claude Design alternative
The free, open-source desktop app from the reel. Describe what you want and your own AI (Claude Code, Codex or an API key) designs it: prototypes, dashboards, slide decks and motion graphics.
Checked on 19 Oct 2026. Tools change fast, so the official page always wins if it says something different.
What you need first
Step by step
Download the desktop app
Get it from the official site or the GitHub Releases page (links below). Pick Mac (Apple chip or Intel) or Windows. No Node, no Terminal needed.
Connect your AI
Open the app. It finds coding agents already installed on your computer, like Claude Code or Codex. No agent? Add your own API key in the settings instead.
Type what you want
Describe it in plain English, for example "a landing page for my coffee shop" or "a 10-slide pitch deck for my bakery". Or start from one of its templates (15 deck templates, 36 themes).
Refine it
Ask for changes in the same project until it looks right. You can also add your brand colours and fonts as a design system.
Export
Slides export as PDF, PowerPoint (PPTX), HTML, ZIP or Markdown. Motion graphics render to an MP4 video.
Tip: On a Mac, if you want to use it from Claude Code and the od command does something weird, open Settings → MCP server in the app and copy the snippet from there.

The catch
- The app is free, the AI isn't. Your Claude, OpenAI or other plan or API credits pay for every design it makes.
- No Linux app yet. Mac and Windows only, unless you run it from source.
- Some features are still unfinished. The README lists the Figma import and some editing tools as alpha or partly shipped.
- The cloud version costs money. The hosted OpenDesign Cloud has paid plans. You don't need it if you use your own agent or key.
