FilmCraft: a free video editor that works like Premiere Pro

The free, open-source editor from the reel, made by the ArtCraft team. Source and program monitors, a real timeline, every trim tool, colour grading with live scopes, effects, keyframes, captions and an audio mixer. It runs on your own computer, no subscription.

What you need first

Step by step

Open the official release page

Use the GitHub releases link below (official, from the team). Scroll down to Assets.

Tip: Only download from the official links on this page. Look-alike copies of the team's apps have popped up on GitHub.

Pick the file for your computer

Mac: the file ending in macos-universal.dmg. Windows: windows-x64.msi (most PCs) or windows-arm64.msi (Snapdragon / ARM laptops). Linux: AppImage, Flatpak, .deb or .rpm.

Install and open it

Mac: open the .dmg and drag the app into Applications. Windows: run the .msi. Then open the app.

Import and start cutting

Use Import to bring in your clips, drag them onto the timeline and edit. The shortcuts editor (Opt+Cmd+K on Mac) has presets for standard editor key layouts.

Tip: While it's in alpha, keep copies of important footage and projects.

Export

Open Export, pick Media File and H.264, and render. It renders in the background so you can keep editing.

Optional: let Claude edit

Every button is also a command. The team ships a command-line tool and an MCP server (see Built for agents in the README) so Claude or another AI agent can cut, trim, grade and export. This part is for people comfortable with a terminal.

The catch

It's an alpha. The team's own estimate is about 86% of the features and about 56% ready for real production work.
It can't open Premiere project files (.prproj) yet. You can move timelines over as FCP7 XML, AAF or OTIO.
Big footage can be slow. Colour grading and export still run on the CPU, and camera/phone files from the wild are less tested. Windows and Linux get less testing than Mac.
No plugins yet (no VST3, Audio Units or OpenFX), and few AI features so far.
Keep your paid editor for client jobs for now and try this one on the side.
