4 GitHub tricks every AI builder should know
Read code in your browser, turn a whole repo into one file for Claude or ChatGPT, get AI-written docs with a chat, and see if a project is really growing.
Checked on 15 Oct 2026. Tools change fast, so the official page always wins if it says something different.
Step by step
Press . on any repo
Open a repo on GitHub and press the . key. The project opens in a code editor in your browser (VS Code). You need to be signed in to GitHub.
Tip: It's for reading and editing. There's no terminal, so it can't run code.
Change github to gitingest
The whole repo becomes one text file you can paste into Claude or ChatGPT.
github.com/obra/superpowers gitingest.com/obra/superpowers
Tip: Big repos can be too big: Superpowers came to 227 files and about 415.6k tokens. Use gitingest's include and exclude filters to keep only the files you need.
Change github to deepwiki
You get AI-written docs for the repo, plus a chat that answers questions about the code. Free for public repos.
deepwiki.com/obra/superpowers
Check star-history.com
Paste the repo into star-history.com to see if it's really growing or just had one lucky week.

The catch
- Big repos won't fit. One file of a big repo can be more than Claude or ChatGPT can read at once. Filter it first.
- github.dev needs a GitHub sign-in and can't run code.
- AI-written docs can be wrong. Check the README or the code for anything important.
- A spike isn't growth. Look at the whole star history, not one week.
