PdfCraft: a free app for the PDF jobs people pay for

The free, open-source PDF app from the reel, made by the ArtCraft team. Merge files, split them, move pages around, fill in and sign forms, lock a PDF with a password and black out private info. It runs on your own computer, with no account.

CostFree and open source (MIT or Apache-2.0). No account, no telemetry, no cloud.

DoesView and search PDFs, organize, combine and split pages, comments, fill and create forms, basic digital signatures, passwords, redaction, printing. Press Cmd/Ctrl+K to find any tool.

Runs onMac (Apple chip and Intel), Windows (64-bit, 32-bit, ARM), Linux and FreeBSD. There's also a web build you host yourself.

What you need first

Step by step

Download it

Open the official page (link below) and click Download Launcher, or open Other platforms and downloads and pick the standalone installer for your computer.

Tip: The launcher also installs and updates the team's other free apps. If you only want the PDF app, take the standalone download.

Install and open it

Mac: open the .dmg and drag the app to Applications. Windows: run the .msi installer (or use the portable zip). Linux: Flatpak, AppImage, .deb or .rpm.

Open any PDF

Drag a PDF onto the window or click Open.

Find the tool you need

Press Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux) and type what you want: combine, split, rotate, fill, sign, protect, redact. Or browse the All tools list on the left.

Save

Save as usual. Changes are autosaved every minute, and undo still works after you save.

Tip: While it's in alpha, keep a copy of anything important before you edit it.

The catch

It's an early alpha. The team says so in their README. Expect some bugs.
Editing existing text isn't reliable yet. Changing words that are already in a PDF is still on their to-do list. Pages, forms, comments, passwords and redaction are the strong parts today.
No Word to PDF yet. It can't turn Office files into PDFs, and its .docx export loses the layout.
OCR is Latin script only for now, and full XFA forms aren't supported.
