Harvey: a free AI sales rep

The open-source AI sales agent from the reel. It learns what you sell from your website, finds local businesses, reads their sites for gaps, writes a 3-email sequence about what it found, and waits for your approval before anything goes out. It runs on the Claude or ChatGPT plan you already pay for.

CostFree and open source (MIT). The AI runs on your existing Claude Pro/Max or ChatGPT plan (no API bill). You also need a mailbox to send from (the README suggests Google Workspace, about $7 a month).

What you need first

1Claude Pro/Max or a ChatGPT planIt uses your subscription through the Claude Code CLI (default) or the Codex CLI. It reads your usage limits and leaves headroom for your own work.

2A separate sending domainNever cold email from your main domain. Buy a second domain, make one mailbox on it (Gmail/Workspace, Microsoft 365 or any SMTP mailbox) and set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC.

3Python 3.11 or newerMacs ship with 3.9. Install a newer one first (for example brew install [email protected]).

Step by step

Download it

Open the GitHub page (link below), click the green Code button and copy the link, then in Terminal: git clone + the link, and cd into the folder.

Tip: Only download from the official GitHub page.

Let Claude set it up (easiest)

In that folder type claude and say "set up Harvey for me". The repo ships instructions that turn Claude Code into a setup wizard: it installs what's missing, asks for what it needs and trains Harvey on your product.

Or set it up yourself

Teach it your product

harvey train https://your-site.com reads your website and learns what you sell. Then harvey signals --confirm free turns on the free signals it should look for.

Find businesses and review emails

harvey discover (free source by default, it always shows the cost first), then harvey dashboard and open localhost:5555. Read every email in the Outbox and approve or reject it. harvey run starts the loop.

Tip: Keep approval on. harvey sending pause is the kill switch.

The catch

You are the sender. Cold email laws apply to you: in the US (CAN-SPAM) you need a true subject line, a working opt-out and your postal address in the footer. In the UK and EU you need a real reason that person would care. Some countries need consent first.
Use a separate domain. Cold email can hurt a domain's reputation. Warm the new mailbox up slowly and keep daily sends low.
It's early. Version 0.3, set up in the terminal. Expect some fiddling.
Subscription limits. It uses your Claude or ChatGPT plan's limits. Check your provider's terms and usage limits.
Skip the LinkedIn option. The README itself warns that LinkedIn automation breaks LinkedIn's terms and can get the account restricted.
