ChatGPT study codes: learn it, don't just read it

Paste one setup prompt at the start of a chat. Then type a short code and ChatGPT switches into that study mode. They work in Claude too.

Step by step

Paste the setup prompt

Start a new chat and paste this first. Now ChatGPT knows what each code means.

For this chat, I'll use study codes. When I type one, do this:
ELI5 [topic]: explain the topic like I'm five.
80/20 [topic]: give me the 20% of the topic that does 80% of the work.
FEYNMAN [topic]: ask me to explain the topic back to you, then show me the gaps in my explanation.
QUIZ ME [topic]: ask me one question at a time and wait for my answer. Keep going until I get it right.
MINDMAP [topic]: show how all the main ideas connect, on one page.
Reply "Ready" when you understand.

After you've read something, use FEYNMAN and QUIZ ME. Explaining it back and answering questions is the part that helps you remember.

Make the codes work in every chat

The codes only last for the chat where you pasted the setup. To keep them, paste the setup prompt into Settings → Personalization → Custom instructions. You need an account for that.

The catch

These aren't built into ChatGPT. ChatGPT only reads the words. Without the setup prompt, a code may not do what you expect.
The codes reset in a new chat unless you save them in custom instructions.
AI can get things wrong. Check important facts against your notes or textbook.
