GenOffice: a free Microsoft Office with AI built in

The free, open-source app from the reel, made by Genspark. Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDF, Markdown and HTML editors that open and save real .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files, with an AI panel next to every document. Editing and PDF conversion happen on your own computer.

CostThe app is free and open source (Apache-2.0), no trial and no paid tier for the apps. The AI is not free: you sign in with a Genspark account or add your own AI key, and pay for that.

DoesEdits Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and saves them back in the same format. The AI rewrites documents as tracked changes you can roll back, builds spreadsheets with real formulas and charts, drafts slide decks from a prompt, and edits or converts PDFs (PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint) on your computer.

What you need first

1A Mac, Windows PC or Linux computerIt's a desktop app. There's no phone version.

2An AI option (only for the AI features)Either sign in with a Genspark account (no key needed, their plan and credits apply) or paste your own API key in Settings → AI. Plain editing and PDF conversion work without AI.

Step by step

Download the installer

Open the GitHub page (link below) → Releases on the right → latest version. Mac with Apple chip: the -arm64.dmg. Older Intel Mac: the plain .dmg. Windows: -x64.exe (or -arm64.exe on Snapdragon laptops). Linux: .deb, .rpm or .AppImage.

Tip: Only download from the official GitHub Releases page or the official website. The Mac and Windows installers are signed.

Install and open it

Mac: open the .dmg and drag the app into Applications. Windows: run the .exe. You can open and edit Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files straight away.

Turn on the AI

Sign in with Genspark, or go to Settings → AI and paste a key from the AI company you already use (Claude, OpenAI, Gemini…). Each AI request is billed by whoever you picked.

Try one edit

Open a document, type an instruction in the AI panel (e.g. tighten this section and add three bullet points) and check the changes before you keep them. Every AI turn can be rolled back.

Optional: switch off analytics

Official builds send limited usage analytics by default (no document content, file names or email). You can turn it off in Settings → General.

The catch

The app is free, the AI isn't. You pay Genspark or the AI company whose key you add. Their prices apply, not the app's.
AI requests leave your computer. The document text the AI works on goes to the AI provider you chose. Keep that in mind for private files.
It's young. First released in summer 2026 and updated almost daily. Check important files in Word or Excel before you send them.
Analytics are on by default in the official builds. One switch turns them off.
Always check the AI's work. It can get numbers and facts wrong, especially in decks it researches for you.
