9 free GitHub repos that replace paid apps
The full list from the reel, with the link, what each one does, and what it needs to run. Most are self-hosted: you run them on your own computer or a small server, so start with the one that saves you the most.
Self-host with Docker or npm. Free to self-host for your own business under its fair-code Sustainable Use License (not OSI open source); a paid cloud plan exists if you don't want to host it.
github.com/n8n-io/n8n ↗
Desktop app. Runs on your own computer, so a recent Mac (Apple chip) or a PC with an NVIDIA GPU is much faster. AGPL-3.0.
github.com/debpalash/VoiceStudio ↗
No subscription, but SEO data comes from your own DataForSEO API key and you pay DataForSEO for what you use. Self-host with Docker or on Cloudflare's free plan. They also offer a hosted version. MIT.
github.com/every-app/open-seo ↗
Runs with Docker Compose. Works with cloud models or local models through Ollama (local models need a decent amount of RAM). MIT plus third-party licenses.
github.com/Tencent/WeKnora ↗
Download for Mac, Windows or Linux from the GitHub Releases page. Cloud models are optional and use your own API key. MIT.
github.com/OpenWhispr/openwhispr ↗
The self-hosted Community edition is free (Docker or packages). Some features are in the paid Enterprise edition. GPL-3.0.
github.com/opf/openproject ↗
This is the MIT community edition of Cal.com, meant for self-hosting and recommended by its makers for personal, non-production use. For a business, Cal.com's own hosted plans are the supported route.
github.com/calcom/cal.diy ↗
Self-host with Docker or one-click deploy. A paid cloud version exists. Core is MIT, some enterprise features are licensed separately.
github.com/chatwoot/chatwoot ↗
Desktop app for Mac and Windows. Keep recordings local, use your own S3 storage, or self-host the web part. Core is AGPL, some parts are licensed separately.
github.com/CapSoftware/Cap ↗
Checked on 23 Oct 2026. Tools change fast, so the official page always wins if it says something different.
What you need first
Step by step
Pick the one that saves you most
Start with the paid app you use most. One tool set up properly beats nine half-installed.
Open its GitHub page
Use the links above. Read the README's Quick start or Self-hosting section first.
Desktop apps: download and open
For VoiceStudio, OpenWhispr and Cap go to Releases on the right of the GitHub page and download the file for your computer.
Server apps: run it with Docker
For the others, install Docker Desktop, then follow the repo's Docker steps (usually docker compose up -d) and open the local address it shows.
Tip: Stuck on a step? Paste the README into Claude and ask it to walk you through it for your computer.
Move one workflow over
Rebuild one real workflow (one automation, one booking page, one inbox) before you cancel the paid app.

The catch
- Self-hosting takes setup time. Most of these you run yourself, and you're in charge of updates and backups.
- Some still have running costs. OpenSEO needs pay-as-you-go DataForSEO data, cloud AI models need your own API key, and a 24/7 server costs a few dollars a month.
- Check each license. n8n is fair-code (free for your own use, not for reselling as a service), and the Cal.diy edition is recommended for personal use.
