book-to-skill: turn any book into an AI tutor

The free, open-source repo from the reel. Point it at a PDF or ebook you own and it builds a skill your AI agent loads on demand: core ideas, one file per chapter, a glossary, patterns and a cheat sheet. Then you ask questions and it answers from your copy of the book.

CostFree and open source (MIT). You only pay for your Claude plan.
DoesTurns a book, a folder of docs or a stack of papers into an agent skill: SKILL.md, chapters/, glossary.md, patterns.md and cheatsheet.md.
NeedsClaude Code (or Codex, Copilot CLI, Amp, OpenCode). Python 3 for the text extractor. Node.js if you use the npx install line.

What you need first

1Claude CodeAnthropic's coding agent that runs in your terminal. It comes with a paid Claude plan (Pro or above).
2Python 3 + Node.jsPython runs the text extractor on your computer. Node.js gives you the npx command for the one-line install.
3A book you ownPDF, EPUB, DOCX, Markdown, HTML, RTF or TXT. MOBI/AZW needs the free Calibre app.

Step by step

Install it from the official repo

In a terminal run npx skills add virgiliojr94/book-to-skill and pick Claude Code. Or clone it: git clone https://github.com/virgiliojr94/book-to-skill.git ~/.claude/skills/book-to-skill

Tip: Only use virgiliojr94/book-to-skill. A copycat repo with the same name was caught stealing data (see the catch below).

Check your extractors (optional)

From the skill folder run python3 scripts/extract.py --check. It tells you which PDF/EPUB tools you have and the exact command to install anything missing. Technical books with code and tables convert best with pip3 install docling.

Point it at your book

Start claude and type /book-to-skill ~/Books/my-book.pdf. You can also give it a folder or several files, plus a name: /book-to-skill ~/notes/ my-notes. It asks whether the book is technical or text-heavy and picks the right extractor.

Say no to publishing a paid book

At the end it offers to push the skill to GitHub. It defaults to private. For any book you bought, keep it private or skip it.

Ask it questions

Open a new Claude Code session and use the skill's name: /my-book loads the core ideas, /my-book pricing finds and explains a topic, /my-book ch07 dives into chapter 7. It loads only the chapter it needs, so it uses far fewer tokens than pasting the whole book.
