claude-video: let Claude watch any video
The free, open-source repo from the reel. Give it a YouTube link or a video file and it pulls out timestamped frames and the transcript, then hands them to Claude. Ask what the hook is, when the cuts happen, what's on screen at 0:45, or why a video works.
Checked on 19 Oct 2026. Tools change fast, so the official page always wins if it says something different.
What you need first

Open a Code session
Open the Claude desktop app and click Customize in the sidebar. (Using the terminal instead? Start claude and run /plugin marketplace add bradautomates/claude-video then /plugin install watch@claude-video.)
Add the repo as a plugin marketplace
Go to Plugins → Add → Add marketplace → Add from a repository, paste https://github.com/bradautomates/claude-video and click Sync.
Tip: Adding the marketplace doesn't install it yet. Do the next step too.
Install Watch
Find Watch in the marketplace you just added and install it. Then start a new Code session.
Try a short video first
Open a folder with a short video as your project and paste: Use the watch skill on example.mp4 in the folder I shared. For setup, choose balanced detail and captions only (none). Summarize what is visible, with timestamps. If it says a tool is missing, ask it to run the bundled setup.py to check and install what's missing.
Break down a competitor's video
Try: Watch this video [YouTube link] and tell me what the hook is in the first 3 seconds, when the cuts happen, what text is on screen, and why it holds attention. For long videos, focus on a range: --start 0:00 --end 0:30.
Optional: add a free Google AI Studio key
Get a key at aistudio.google.com/apikey. When the setup wizard asks, or in the file ~/.config/watch/.env after GEMINI_API_KEY=, paste it yourself. Never post it anywhere public.

The catch
- Claude Code only. It doesn't work in the normal Claude chat, as an uploaded custom skill, or in Cowork. Use a Code session in the desktop app, VS Code or the terminal.
- Some links won't download. URL access depends on the site and your network. Private or login-only videos need your browser cookies (opt-in). A downloaded file always works.
- Google mode sends your video to Google. With a key, YouTube links go to Google directly and other videos or local files are uploaded to Google and deleted after the answer. For private videos, use the local mode (
--engine local), which never contacts Google. - Frames are snapshots. Scene detection doesn't catch every moment. Shorter videos (under 10 minutes) or a focused range give the best answers. Claude's "why it works" is an opinion, not data.
- Images cost usage. More frames means more of your Claude plan. Start with the default detail.
