OmniRoute: keep coding when you hit your limit (the safe setup)

One app on your computer that Claude Code, Cursor and Codex plug into. When a plan runs out it moves you down a level: your subscription, then paid keys, then cheap models, then free ones.

CostFree (MIT). Free plans are other models, not Claude

Checked on 13 Oct 2026. Tools change fast, so the official page always wins if it says something different.

What you need first

1Node.js 22 or 24OmniRoute installs with npm.→
2A coding toolClaude Code, Cursor or Codex.
3Free keys from 2–3 providersGroq, Cerebras, Mistral or OpenRouter. Sign up yourself.

The GitHub page, explained

Free tools like this live on GitHub. Open github.com/diegosouzapw/OmniRoute and this is what you'll see at the top:

The diegosouzapw/OmniRoute GitHub page: Star count, green Code button and About box marked 1 to 3
  1. Star (75.8k): how many people saved it. More stars means more people trust it. Clicking it is optional and needs a free GitHub account.
  2. Green Code button: the download button. You only need it if a step below tells you to.
  3. About: one line on what it does, so you know you're on the right page.

Scroll down the GitHub page to README: that's the creator's full manual. This page is the simple version.

Step by step

Install it with your own password

Set a long password first. If you don't, the admin password is CHANGEME.

Mac (Terminal)
npm install -g omniroute
export INITIAL_PASSWORD="pick-a-long-password"
omniroute
Windows (PowerShell)
npm install -g omniroute
$env:INITIAL_PASSWORD="pick-a-long-password"
omniroute

Tip: The dashboard opens at http://localhost:20128. Keep it on your own computer: don't share it or put it online.

Connect only free plans with your own keys

Dashboard → Providers. Add keys you made yourself, e.g. Groq, Cerebras, Mistral, OpenRouter (free models), NVIDIA NIM.

Tip: Free sign-ups: Groq · Cerebras · Mistral · OpenRouter

Skip anything marked “avoid”

OmniRoute's own free-tier list marks 13 providers avoid because using them through a proxy can break their rules (accounts can get banned). That includes Kiro and the no-key OpenCode Free. Don't connect them, and don't rely on the zero-setup auto option (it uses OpenCode Free).

From its FREE_TIERS list: the ToS column ① says avoid.

OmniRoute's free-tier list with the avoid rows marked

Point Claude Code at it

Let OmniRoute write Claude Code's settings and pick a model from a provider you connected:

omniroute configure claude

Tip: Other tools: omniroute configure codex, cursor, cline… Or use the address http://localhost:20128/v1 with the key from Dashboard → Endpoints.
